First they came for the Muslims

But I learned nothing from history class

Martin Niemöller was a national conservative, a Protestant pastor, who welcomed Adolf Hitler’s assumption of power. He thought he was part of a national revival. He learned how wrong he was, and how insidious the process towards hell. He wrote an oft cited poem about what happened next which you should read, and post on your wall. I have rewritten his words as I see their applicability today.

First they came for the Muslims

And I did not speak out

Because I am not a Muslim

Then they came for the gays, the lesbians, the transgender

And I did not speak out

Because I am straight

Then they came for the Mexican immigrants

And I did not speak out

Because I was was born in the United States

Then they came for the Democrats

And I did not speak out

Because I am not a Democrat

Then they came for the Republicans who wouldn’t overturn an election …

Then they came for the Vice President with gallows and a noose …

And I still did not speak out

Because I was too busy worrying about losing Twitter followers

Because I was angry that Parler got shut down

Because I was angry that the world started muzzling my hate speech

Then they came for me

But I’m not worried, I still have my MAGA hat and my guns

I don’t understand why no one is speaking up for me.
